Jeremy Pereira

Director

Jeremy Pereira is a criminal law specialist with extensive experience in white-collar crime, regulatory investigations and serious criminal litigation. He regularly acts for directors, senior executives, companies and high-net-worth individuals in sensitive investigations and prosecutions.

 

Jeremy has significant experience in matters investigated or prosecuted by the Attorney-General’s Chambers, Commercial Affairs Department, Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB), and the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS). He is particularly recognised for his strategic handling of matters at the pre-charge stage and his ability to resolve complex cases at the pre-trial stage through effective engagement with enforcement agencies.

 

His practice spans financial crime, corruption, securities and market misconduct offences, money laundering, confiscation proceedings and regulatory enforcement. In addition to white-collar matters, Jeremy maintains an active criminal defence practice and regularly acts in serious cases involving drug trafficking, murder, sexual offences and violent crime. He is on the Supreme Court’s list of assigned counsel for capital cases.

 

Prior to joining NLC Law Asia LLC, Jeremy practised for 12 years at a leading Singapore law practice which is a member of an international law firm, where he was part of its White-Collar Defence & Investigations team.

REPRESENTATIVE EXPERIENCE

White-Collar Crime & Financial Investigations​​​

​

  • Acted for a director accused of abetting cheating in relation to fictitious trade financing transactions involving sums exceeding S$2 million; secured an acquittal after trial.

  • Acted for two directors and successfully reduced 23 GST evasion charges involving more than S$3 million in sales to charges which resulted in non-custodial sentences before trial.

  • Acted for a director facing 13 corruption charges; successfully negotiated a substantial reduction in the alleged gratification amounts across 7 charges from approximately S$214,777 to S$7,750 resulting in a significant drop in imprisonment terms.

  • Acted for three Directors and two Senior Officers of a Singapore company in the high-profile CPIB corruption investigations involving former Minister S. Iswaran and property tycoon Ong Beng Seng.

  • Advised fund managers on the implications of approximately S$500 million in investments and transactions involving hedge funds, BSI Bank and 1MDB-related matters.

  • Acted for the former CEO of Keppel FELS Brazil in connection with corruption investigations relating to alleged payments of approximately US$50 million to Brazilian government officials; a stern warning was ultimately issued in lieu of prosecution.

  • Acted for a director in the trial and appeal proceedings arising from an alleged multi-million-dollar gold investment scheme involving over 2,000 investors and close to S$150 million in turnover.

  • Acted for a group finance director facing 85 conspiracy charges involving S$9.7 million in alleged cheating, forgery and disguising benefits of crime; successfully reduced the financial exposure attributed to the client following extensive investigations and negotiations.

  • Acted for the founder of Singapore-listed Noble Group in joint investigations by the MAS, CAD and ACRA concerning alleged false and misleading disclosures and breaches of disclosure requirements; no further action was taken after close to two years of investigations.

  • Acted for an investment banker and relationship manager in investigations arising from the S$1 billion Envy Asset Management nickel trading fraud; no further regulatory action was taken against the client.

  • Acted for an illegal gambling syndicate leader in High Court confiscation proceedings; reduced the confiscation order from approximately S$472,000 to S$198,000 after challenging concealed income analysis.

  • Acted for business associates linked to individuals involved in Singapore’s largest money-laundering case (S$2.8 billion), advising on investigations and related exposure.

 

Advisory & Investigations

  • Conducted sensitive internal investigations across multiple industries, including allegations of predatory conduct by senior management, whistleblower complaints involving corrupt commission arrangements, and employee misconduct in regulated medical settings; advised on criminal exposure, regulatory reporting obligations and employment termination strategy.

  • Acted for a European manufacturer and supplier of safety equipment in multi-agency investigations following the death of a uniformed officer during a live operation; led parallel internal investigations and advised on regulatory exposure and crisis management. No prosecution was commenced against the company.

  • Acted for a Singapore-listed company in investigations by the Central Provident Fund Board into alleged underpayment of employee contributions; advised on remediation strategy, resulting in no further enforcement action.

  • Acted for an MNC in sensitive internal investigations into alleged staff and sub-contractor misconduct, including phantom worker claims, false declarations for COVID-related grants, employment pass breaches and document forgery; advised senior management on regulatory risk and reporting strategy to the Ministry of Manpower and IRAS.

Capital & Serious Criminal Defence

​

  • Secured acquittals and reduced capital charges in drug trafficking and murder cases, including matters involving mandatory death penalty thresholds.

  • Acted in a murder case involving the death of a pregnant spouse; successfully reduced the original murder charge, resulting in a sentence of 7 years’ imprisonment.

  • Acted for a 15-year-old autistic offender charged with killing his father; the client was sentenced to 5 years’ detention.

  • Acted for a 21-year-old autistic offender initially facing a minimum 8-year custodial term for sexual offences; successfully reduced the charge and obtained a probation sentence.

  • Acted for a medical practitioner charged with outraging the modesty of a patient; successfully secured an acquittal after trial.

  • Successfully mitigated custodial exposure in serious drug, sexual and violent crime matters crossing custodial thresholds, resulting in reduced sentences and non-custodial outcomes (including fines, probation and warnings) where appropriate.

  • Regularly appointed in serious criminal trials and appeals involving allegations of violence and sexual offences, and acts in military court and disciplinary proceedings.​
